Death of a Stranger. When a tramp is found murdered in the woods following a hunt meet, a local poacher is arrested and jailed. However, when the suspect’s father is also brutally murdered, DCI Barnaby (John Nettles) and Sgt Troy (Daniel Casey) realise that there is much more to this case than first appears. Includes Countdown 2000 at 9:55 featuring scenes from Bethlehem, Israel, as midnight is marked with the release of two thousands white doves of peace.

As midnight in London fast approaches, Trevor McDonald and Dermot Murnaghan present a live programme bringing together the best of the main national celebrations. Firstly at 11:00, there is live footage of celebrations from major European cities including Paris and Berlin, and then, as the clock continues to tick down, Nicholas Owen and Katie Derham are live at the Millennium Dome to bring the best of its grand opening show, whilst John Suchet and Mark Austin will be live alongside the expected huge crowds in Westminster. Then as Big Ben strikes midnight to welcome the year 2000, there’s coverage of the spectacular ‘River of Fire’ fireworks display. Plus pictures from other major UK celebrations including in Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
